Early Wednesday Morning
Feb. 8th, 2006 06:14 amYesterday was overcast and cloudy for most of the day. We spent the morning lollygagging around in the hotel room, ordering various room services items and gradually getting ready to head out for the beach or the pool. Around noon, we changed plans and headed out for Playa del Carmin and the 5th Avenue shops. We took a taxi from the front gate and shortly we wuz on the walking street getting invited to shop for the "best crap" in Mexico.
I purchased five postcards, none of which are even remotely obscene. I'm not sure how that worked, as there were alternative. My cousin and her friend were more interested in shopping. We stopped about midway for a margeritta, and three of us walked most of the way down the avenue while Myra sat and ate ice cream at a hagen daaz store.
The three of us watched the ferry depart for Cozumel, and then went back to find Myra. Karen had a recommendation from Traveler for a restaurant, which was just up the alley from the restaurant we stopped at for margerittas, and although I called and could not get anyone, the second time we stopped to for second margerittas and some snacks, they were open and I got reservations for six sharp.
At the margeritta restaurant, we ate some croquettes and bruchetta which were quite good, and then, close to six, wandered down the alley to John Gray's. We sat outside, and waited a bit for them to open.
While they had a couple of very interesting appetizers, split pea soup with lump crab & truffle oil, escargot with red wine, and crab cakes, we skipped the aps and went for the main course.
Judy and I had lobster, with smashed potatoes and tequilla. Karen had pork tenderloin with roquefort, Myra had short ribs. We shared a bottle of spanish wine, which resembled a merlot. Everything was really good. We all had creme brule and then wandered off up the street to flag a taxi for the ride back to hotel.
While we were still at the restaurant and waiting for Judy, who'd gone off in search of a clothing store we'd passed earlier, four young people, three men and one girl, came by on tall stilts, including one with hand stilts. We never figured out why, but they paracticed a bit in the alley and we wuz quite impressed. If there was a pitch, we missed it, and they went back up the alley to the main street.
