Good article about the distributed computing craze. Wonder how long before someone builds an entirely distributed OS? Could be interesting to look at the problem of what a machine does and what parts of it could be farmed out to a secure network. Given that CPU is not the bottleneck for most computing tasks, it would obviously require some interesting architecture improvements.
In any case, the Minn-Stf SETI@Home group is going strong with over 11,000 work units complete. I recently downloaded and installed the UNIX port of SETI for my Mac OS X machine at home so now I'm effectively running two processes on that box when it sits idle. (Like now while I'm at work!)
