So, Bush puts a guy in whose son lost an arm there. He thinks it'll take 5 - 10 years to pacify Iraq. Do these people have no common sense? No sense of decency? Are they all idiots like Bush?

I'm a foreigner, but I'd heard that Bush can send more troops to Iraq without going through the House or Senate. Is this true?

In theory, Bush can as Commander in Chief, but all appropriations bills must originate in and be approved by, the House of Representatives, so they could stop the surge if they desire.

Interesting. So no way around it for Bush?

It's not clear how this will turn out. Bush has been ignoring Congress -- and claming that he can ignore law -- regularly for the past six years. He'll probably claim he can do it again.

We could actually use a court showdown on this issue.

Thanks. It will be nice to see a showdown finally, after the rubber-stamp congress of the past few years.

A footnote: "Senior Republican senators are trying to get word to the president that any troop surge would be dead on arrival in Congress."

Hell, better that than a troop surge dead on arrival in Iraq!

There's someone who has written what appears to be a fairly compelling argument (I phrase it that way since I have not actually read it yet- caught a bit about her in a paper at my daughter's school today but was unable to jot down notes since I was in a rush) that Dubya is an active "dry drunk," which may contribute heavily towards his behaviours. I'll research it and send you notes on what I find....
