I was fascinated to find that "flip-flopping" has been used against people who do not toe the Republican party line for at least ten years. I saw some 1996 (or was it '97?) ads against Cindy Watson, a Republican who opposed the hog industry waste practices and was subject to a multimillion dollar campaign on that point, and they used the term.

She wasn't a Dem, but she may as well have been.
