We started it, so we can call it whatever we want. Besides, when it started, we were the only ones playing the game -- the first Series was between the Providence Grays and the New York Metropolitans...in 1884. The first modern Series was played in 1903.
It's also worth noting that most of the globe's best baseball players today play on U.S. (or Toronto's) MLB teams, save only Cuban nationals (some of whom manage anyway).
It is also worth noting that everywhere else the word "world" is used we generally invite the world to participate. The word is not used to refer to a club competition (US or US-Canada), but to a competition between all interested nations.
It's named after the "World" newspaper that started it. There are a lot of other things worth being upset about about then the name of the NL and AL championship series.
