Sharon, Laura and I went to a hotel in St. Paul last night and two by the MoA. Then Laura and I went back to the Crowne Plaza, which didn't look quite as loverly as the first time I saw it, mixed with Sharon's exuberance. Certainly less likely to provoke fan comments than the Thunderbird, but a tacky plastic fig tree and bowl of fruit had been hiding under dim lights. Oh well, it would still work and, it doesn't feel like a fish bowl.

Oh, I love the Thunderbird! The tackiest hotel in Minneapolis, ever since the Hi-Way Motel in Spring Lake Park was painted about 10 years ago (from its BRIGHT pink).

The room that they use for the Dealers Room for most conventions (of all types) used to be called the...get this..."Wampum Room". I don't think they changed it until the mid- to late-'80s.

Yipes!

I was under the impression that the Thunderbird was going to be torn down fairly soon for some Mall of America-related expansion anyways. I could be wrong about that though.

Wouldn't be my choice though, even though it does have more character than most other hotels put together.

Hell, it has more character than most hotel chains put together.

It's going to be torn down within the next decade because it lies in the safety zone of the new north-south runway at MSP Int'l Airport.

We asked. It isn't being torn down.

I'm not sure I'd call dead animals and kitsch character...

I was also under the impression that the Thunderbird was going to be tore down, which makes me sad as I have been to cons there and like it for the kitsch value. I can't really imagine Minicon there, though.
