Jan. 22nd, 2002 12:37 pmJust caught the Peggy Lee obit after I got to work. It must have missed the New York Times this morning. I grew up about 60 miles north of where she was born (where she was born and where I grew up, 60 miles means almost next door), and went to school in Fargo where she got her stage name. All long after she'd moved to the Big Time, of course. Never did see her perform, and now I guess I never will.
When I was growing up, we thought her too old fashioned, because rock & roll had supplanted jazz. It wasn't until I went to Edinburgh in the early '70s, that I found a person around my own age who liked her.
I'd always heard she responded if, at one of her performances, you sent a message that you were from North Dakota. If so, she had a hard life when she was there, but then, there's not many of us from there. Probably not a large blip on her audience. Never tested the theory; probably would not have even if I'd caught one of her shows.
The Fargo Forum has a headline and links to the AP story, the Jamestown Sun has nothing. The New York Times, on the otherhand, has a long obit, as does MSNBC and CNN.
