I once got stranded in Minneapolis, coming back from ConComCon in Portland in 2004. We had to run to the Mall of America to grab a change of clothes before the mall closed. (This worked better for me than it did for marahsk; I just pointed and said "that, that, and those" while she had to run to different departments.) Since then, I've had an easy-to-carry duffle bag. I got a Samsonite bag with lots of interesting pockets and designed to fit exactly into overhead compartments even on little planes.) If I'm going on a two or three day trip, the duffle bag carries everything. For a four or five day trip, I pack the duffle bag into the bigger suitcase on the way to the airport, then I take it out at the airport and check the (half-empty) suitcase. For longer trips (e.g. London/Dublin/Edinburgh/Glasgow last year), the checked suitcase plus duffle bag carried everything I needed. Each time I moved, I made sure clean clothes went into the duffle bag, so I would have been fine if the airlines got confused.
