Mangosteen Juice -- hmm. Or just another health food ripoff?

OK, health food ripoff. $39.95 per bottle. A few dozen bottles and I could be in Asia eating the real thing.

Caleb got us on the noni juice thing -- then brought home some mangosteen by mistake. It does taste better than noni, but I'm sticking with my pomegranite juice and dark chocolate.

I dunno if it is health food rip-off, but I found it at CostCo and bought a bottle, because I lurve mangosteens and hoped it tasted like them. It's not bad, but it doesn't taste like mangosteens either.

K. [there's still most of the bottle in the fridge right now]

I don't believe I've ever heard of mangosteens before. What are they? A cross between a mango and something else (which I can't figure out from the name, and will no doubt kick myself after you tell me)?

You may have seen them without knowing what they are. The fruit merchants on Spadina have them when they're in season. Here's an intro:

This is likely overkill for info but the illustration is better:

Good Lord, those are ugly. :)

Thanks for the info, though - the description sounds intriguing enough that I may look for them and try one. (After all, pomegranates aren't exactly the prettiest fruit around either, and I like those. :) )

They're ...

Often considered to be one of the best tasting fruits. (And, sadly not available as far as I'm aware of here in the US.)

Not even at specialty markets? I'm surprised.

The USDA is busy saving our butts -- or, we've got (some) tropical fruit here.

Those sorts of laws against importing produce because of the risk of fruit flies have always made me laugh. Now, I'm no biologist, and maybe I'm missing something, but fruit flies a) aren't that harmful and b) can fly across the border just as easily as they can be carried in a load of fruit. Unless this is a different species of fruit fly?

Is it also illegal to import the seeds? Why couldn't they be grown, say in Florida or Louisiana, where the climate is hot and humid? Or even Puerto Rico, for that matter?

Depends on the fruit fly and the vectors they carry.

The one article says that they require high humidity. They're also not familiar to most people. They do grow some in Hawaii.
