Batcave Update
Nov. 29th, 2005 06:27 pmI still have to wire in the back speakers. That's been hanging in for a long time. The thought of crawling around in the attic does not do much for me.
I moved the turntable upstairs. I've wired up the Panasonic Laserdisc, added an antenna for the tuner, and wired up the DVD (except the picture seems to have gone walk-about), and gotten the TV to set the cable and the receiver right when I turn it on, as well as the connections for the Laserdisc and the rest. WooT!. The receiver, laser, CD and turntable are hiding in the eaves. The TV, DVD, and cable box are in plain sight. I've also moved all of the laserdiscs upstairs and have started moving the records upstairs as well. The DVDs have been there for quite some time. I suspect I need more and better shelving up there. I started on that project once, but got sidetracked. I do need another outlet/extension box so I can power a bunch of stuff off the receiver’s switched outlet.
My audio rack is a large MDF cart from Menards. I had to drill holes in the lower section so I could run cords around. The hole where the receiver is looks like a medusa, and I’m still a pair of rear speakers and a subwoofer short. If I add a VCR, it’s going to look still worse. I’ve got one free infrared repeater, but I was looking at buying the one from X10, although I’m not sure where I’d put it. The cart is on wheels, so it’s fairly easy to roll it in and out of the eaves when I need to work on the wiring, but I’ve been setting it really close to the knotty pine doors that hide the cavity. No room for an infrared repeater.
I had the receiver on the top of the cart. It was a great place to work on it, but the CD and the turntable really have to be on the top shelf. The CD player is too long for the lower shelf. The turntable needs headroom to open the dust cover. The laserdisc had already attached itself to the top of the cart, and required a good tug to make it let go. I ran one disc of 2001 through it just to make sure it still worked. I found one of Thong’s CDs in it, and I’m kind of amazed that it played a computer recorded CD.
I still need something like a wiring tube to hide the maze of wires heading for the eaves, but getting the receiver out of line of sight has helped to clean it up. There’s still all kinds of junk littering the floor up there, that I’ll need when I start stringing the wire to the rear speakers.
I just wrote a short script for the Video Production Class. I’ve been procrastinating on it for almost two weeks.
