Eek! I've always lusted after a super sleek microphone headset, and suddenly I learn it's a voice tube? Where's the geek cachet in that? (Send help, can't spell)
What word are we talking about? Larry was talking about "geek cache". Cache spelled that way means a place to put things--a cache of food on the trail, or the memory cache in a computer.
2 a : a characteristic feature or quality conferring prestige b : PRESTIGE

I thought Larry was using the word to mean prestigious or fashioable; as Merriam-Webster says at http://www.m-w.com/cgi-bin/dictionary?book=Dictionary&va=cachet
2 a : a characteristic feature or quality conferring prestige b : PRESTIGE <being rich... doesn't have the cachet it used to -- Truman Capote>
That word is from the French and is spelled with a T.
Don't mess with me on English spelling and grammar! ;-)
It ain't English spelling and grammar; it's French... ;-)
But, yes, you're right. I wanted "cachet." I always try to spell it "cache" and think there's an invisible accent mark on the final "e." (Sadly, there are no invisible accent marks, sigh.)
Must copyedit . . .

Date: 2005-10-25 03:08 pm (UTC)I agree that Larry wanted cachet rather than cache.
And you probably shouldn't mess with me about English spelling, especially on words derived from French.
