Shinkai has been compared favorably to Hayao Miyazaki, the creator of "Spirited Away" and "Howl's Moving Castle."

Film historian and critic Marc Hairston will introduce the film."The Place Promised in Our Early Days" is set in an alternate world where post-war Japan was divided between the United States and the Soviet Union. Shinkai's visually stunning anime tells the dream like story of three teenagers who make a simple promise to each other that results in a world-changing event.
