This is a persistent mistake of his. He's the one who earnestly advises aspiring writers that an intelligent character is never sympathetic. A character can be "clever," but not intelligent, if you want the reader's sympathy. That's from a Writer's Digest booklet written quite some time ago, and was the occasion of my personally deciding that I wanted nothing further to do with his work.
Kurt Vonnegut diagnosed this sort of thing a long time ago, in Breakfast of Champions: "He had reached the stage where his bad chemicals made him want to be proud of his craziness."
