The DFL city endorsing convention is today. I'm waffling on going. I can no longer support either of the two candidates who support using sales tax for a new stadium.
We're going anyway - we're hoping there are enough people protesting the stadium that #1, the candidates get the message, and perhaps, #2, there is no endorsement.
I'm going to a non-party progressive organizing event in the Third Congressional. Join us if you like. It's at noon for lunch ($15) or 1:30 for free (the meeting).
Call my cell.
K. [anyone is welcome to come along. PS: I'll be quit distressed if RT doesn't get the nod, stadium aside]
Don't worry!! Now that liberalism has been defeated forever (as predicted in National Review), the Republican candidate will win. And, being a good conservative, a Republican mayor won't support spending public money on such frivolities.
Just got back from the convention (4th ballot no endorsement for mayor). There actually were two "No Stadium cantidates, a young guy named Savage (who really got the crowd going for a while) and an old Lib whose name I forgot. Since neither got 10% they were both dropped after the first ballot. I actually talked with McLaughlin (my sister in law was one of his ward cheifs) and told him that his stadium taxation without referendum was wrong and both he and RT should listen to the people. He didn't really appreciate that but. Should be a fun primary.
Laura Jean hit Rybak up with the same question. I think they've taken the deal. Rybak is smoother than McLaughlin, and if he'd stop with the stadium, I'd be all in support.
Wish I coulda gone. I was thinking of responding to RT's response to my letter about the stadium but I kinda felt like I was wasting my time. In the meantime I've been reading up on what little research has been done with regards to the cost's/benefits of stadiums.
Tons o' benefits, as long as you own a team, are a player, or bar next to the stadium. From what I remember the last time they tried this, it's just a means of giving tax dollars to rich people, with a few crumbs falling here and there.
