Hoan Kiem Lake is the spirtual center of Hanoi. It's very much as if a lake like Lake of the Isles had been dropped into downtown. It has its own Excalibur legend and a variety of turtle, which replaces the Lady of the Lake.

West Lake is the biggest lake in Hanoi. We went there twice. It has swan boats and big boats for parties and dining.

The Truc Bach Lake is bascially a bay of West Lake. We went around it on the Cyclos (Pedi cabs), and stopped at the pagoda on West Lake. Both have swan boats, although West Lake has large ships that go out on it. It's a bit as if Lake Minnetonka moved east into the city.

Thien Quang Lake - We did not make it to this lake.

From the city maps, it looked as if Hanoi has more lakes than Minneapolis. It certainly uses it's lakes better, and you can eat and drink on their shores. On the other hand, the polution is a whole lot worse as well.
