Date: 2025-04-12 02:57 pm (UTC)This sounds depressingly like a move toward unpersoning anyone who doesn't carry a smartphone. I'm already seeing this with SF conventions, some of which are making it impossible to deal with them unless you have a smartphone, email address, and credit cards. Yes, the number of people who don't have these things is declining rapidly (one two paper Hugo Award nominating ballots were cast this year, and both of them arrived too late to count), but it's not zero, and it includes at least one person who has been honored by Worldcon on stage with the Big Heart Award. Another one is my wife, who only attends now via my participation because it's nearly impossible for her to do so any other way. I suspect that there are going to be convention that will soon stop selling membership for cash at the door if they haven't already done so.
