I find something hopeful in the fact that the phrase "mainstream GLBT culture" even exists.

After attending some of them last year, I think they're referring to things like Will & Grace. It's pretty edgy stuff that they do, mostly new filmmakers. Definitely not Hollywood...

And it's even close to my house!

What I mean is that GLBT culture has become so widespread in the larger society that part of it can now be called "mainstream." This seems to me to be a vast improvement over how things were not long ago.

(Or maybe I should say, "so acknowledged in the larger society." It was always there, at least in some professions and such, but its presence was not acknowledged by society as a whole.)
