Wells Fargo, after getting me to transfer money from one account to another for "free" checking, decided to start charging $8 a month for "free" checking. It took me a while to catch on, but then I went in and closed the account.

So Friday morning, I stop at Wells Fargo to get some tip money for Wiscon, "Oh, what happened to your checking account?" the teller cooed, and as the supervisor moved in for the sell. "You started charging me money for it, so I closed it." "Well, why didn't you talk to someone?" he said. "I did! I did! I did! I told them to close the goddamned account." I said. "You promised free checking as long as the stars shine, and six months later, that went out the window. So now you've got the same deal? I don't have the time..."

Then I open a letter from them at home, $100 for opening a checking account... Too bad I still don't have the time.

Damn, I'd open it just long enough to get the $100. Screw 'em.

Fuck Wells Fargo.

I cannot sing the praises of my credit union enough. I would recommend any credit union over the shenanigans of any bank. Scum of the earth.

Wells Fargo was never an option here in Boston. But when my bank got sold, then got sold, then got sold to Bank of America, I ditched the accounts. They were going to charge me $3 for every ATM transaction, and I was one of those "free checking as long as you have a minimum balance." But they decided that "checking" didn't mean "put my card in this machine at my bank to get some of my money.

So they didn't get any of my money.

Was amused when our main checking account bank was sold to Banco Santander several years ago. The only thing they've done to annoy me...was charging us to use a Banco Santander ATM in Europe.

Some day, all of our banks will be sold, consolidated, and we will all be with the First National Bank of Bank.

Oh, yes... Wells-Fargo. Now, IMHO, the prime contender with Bank of America for the Worst Bank Award. They happened, some years ago, to be the only local bank that had safe-deposit boxes, so I've retained a small account with them to rent one. The highest interest I seem to be able to get on my $7,000.00 deposit seems to be seven cents per year, and I'm not sure the box is worth what it's costing me. I had an account with BOA 50+ years ago, when being in line with my travel to & from work seemed Important, but never liked them -- as Bank of Italy they grew enormously by foreclosing as soon as possible on farmers' loans during the (preveious) Great Depression -- and ditched them long ago. For a while, I was pleased with the Seattle-based Washington Mutual when they expanded & created a branch here, but then they were taken over by Chase (one of the Big Banks largely responsible for the country's current depression), and... ummm... yes, despite my "better the devil you know" approach, I'm thinking seriously of switching entirely to my County Employees' Credit Union.

I use Wells Fargo and my experience is they will waive nearly all fees if you just call them up and ask nicely.
