Ah: "The disruption was the result of an external attack on our domain name registrar" So no, not a defensive measure. Apparently the attack is not against the actual servers at nytimes at all, although I'd only give press-release-type one-sentence almost-non-technical explanations of things like this a 75% chance of giving the correct impression.
For what it's worth, I did a little looking and while nytimes.com does not resolve from UChicago, it does resolve for me at home (via Megapath's nameserver), does not resolve from another ISP in Chicago where I have an account, and does resolve from the data center in France I use. So spotty is the word.
