I hesitate to ask, since this is probably one of those pop culture references that has flown right over my head, but why do you want to trap goldfinches?

No reason at all.

When I bought this house, there was a niger thistle feeder hanging on the catalpa tree. It hung there for quite some time, and no goldfinch ever touched a seed in the thing. It got thrown out at some point.

There's a bunch of sunflowers in front, and the goldfinches are there daily feeding on the flowers, pulling the baby seeds out. It's right by the sidewalk, and they're quite shy, so anytime anybody walks past, they fly off. They're also hard to see in the sunflowers.

Sitting on the porch swing watching them, it seemed like a perfectly whacked topic to write about.
