Handy, and less fuss than dropping them in boiling water (the other trick I've heard for killing the mold spores. Actually, the way mold propagates in these parts, I may try this trick with my cucumbers and tomatoes, too.

I've read about using mild chlorine bleach solutions on green tomatoes to kill mold before wrapping for ripening too. Vinegar seems milder...

Yeah, vinegar is slightly less toxic than bleach.

A weak bleach solution is going to mostly evaporate, and you can rinse the tomato before eating. I don't think it's an issue that way. (This was for wrapping green tomatoes to ripen in the fall/winter, not to immediately eat.) If you pack them away, and one starts molding, it spreads quickly...
