Huh; I can see what's probably wrong with this dissertation from the first few paragraphs of the summary: they decided that because what we actually care about (reading speed) is hard to measure (so variable across people), they'll measure something else, glyph recognition speed. And fast readers don't recognize glyphs. Gosh, I can't see how this could go wrong!
I prefer sans (or very simple serif) on computers and vastly prefer serif in printed materials -- to the point where I find it difficult to read large blocks of sans text and gave up completely on a novel that I *wanted* to read because it was set in a sans type. Also, there are serif types that are vastly more difficult to read than sans or even other serif types.
