They could only experiment on three people because of lack of funds. The big pharma companies declined to participate. "Too risky" I wonder if they are afraid of a real cure, instead of treatments that take months and have to be repeated.

Joan Slonczewski gave a lecture on a similar process at Diversicon. It's complicated. It was another group of three test subjects, but these therapies require modification of each subjects cells -- at least her lecture's did -- where they stole a lot of genetic code from various viri to combat a genetic disease. Chimera come home.
