Rabies deaths are on the rise in Vietnam, according to the country’s National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology, whose director blamed slack management by provincial health authorities and public ignorance of the threat.

But subscribers to ProMED, a disease-outbreak Web site, have pointed out another contributing factor: in the mountainous rural northern provinces where the problem is worst, many people are fond of eating dogs. More

In the book I recently read on the Lewis and Clark expedition, they ate dog with the Indians west of the Rockies. They said it was quite good.

In Viet Nam. It's easy to find in the markets, and the SO's brothers carefully filmed the steps for me on how to prepare it for the table. In the south, it's mostly served at weddings and other big events.

Rabies is an awful problem in the tropics.

I'm not sentimental about dogs. The idea of eating something that eats carrion and feces is another matter.
