The Bundt Cake Disaster
Jan. 2nd, 2016 11:50 amI found a pine tree bundt cake pan on the Nordicware seconds rack, bought it, and made Nigella Lawson's Xmas Bundt cake. It would not come out of the pan, so I dug it out in pieces and put it in a bowl.
I chopped some candied ginger and poured Kraken rum on it. As I was juicing lemons, I zested them and saved the zest.
Along about eight or so, I whipped a pint of cream, threw in some sugar, dumped the rum on the cake pieces, and threw the ginger and lemon zest in the whipped cream. I layered the cake and cream in a glass bowl. I was planning on adding allspice dram, but I can't find the bottle. I think a cup of sherry might have been good on the cake, but the rum soaked candied ginger pieces tasted wonderful in the cream.

From Beautiful Framingham, Massachusetts
Jan. 2nd, 2016 03:30 pmLogging into my Discover account, I was surprised to see that I'd just made a $14 purchase from Staples in Framingham, Massachusetts.
1) I have pretty much stopped shopping at Staples since the bastards canceled two separate online orders I made with them for, err, inexpensive duplex printers.
2) I'm in Minneapolis, Minnesota, which, the last time I checked, is a bit of a drive from Framingham, Massachusetts. So ordering something from a Staples store there for $14 would involve a bit of a flight or a loong drive to pick up. (I'm waay too cheap to pay for shipping, besides there are more than a few Staples stores scattered around the Twin Cities.)
3) It's a number that T-Mobile let loose in their big data breach a few months ago.
4) I chatted with the Discover Card online agent to start the process to change the account number. The usual fraud pattern is to place a small charge against the card to test the number. This was done over the phone. The serious reaping would come after the card number proved good.
5) I discovered that Discover covers (up to $500 purchases) purchases for theft for up to 90 days. I bought a glider cover for the new porch glider that my sister gave me. On or about December 23, somebody ripped it off. I've been working my way through the Discover phone to file a claim. It's slow, but they're being really nice.
