One of the signs that spring is just around the corner: the annual Pioneer Press Peeps Diorama contest is open for entries. Pick your scene, and assemble marshmallow chicks and bunnies. You can make a still life, or a video of 2 minutes or less.

Wildly imaginative past entries replicate current events, poke fun at tabloid stars, re-create the uniquely Minnesotan, and before you ask, it seems as if just about every pun on the name "Peep" has been done.

How many packets of candy do you need? Entries can have just one Peep, but some have hundreds.

Got your idea, and your packet of Peeps? Here's how to enter. The competition closes at 5 p.m. on March 28. Good luck!

I've been eating Bob's Red Mill muesli at least since the dinosaurs turned into birds. If I'm smart, I pick it up at Cub Foods, four or five at a time. If I'm not, and I'm often not, I hit the Uptown Lunds and buy one or two bags at a time. Now the Uptown Lunds store is probably the crusiest grocery store in town and they even have bag boys, but their price on Bob's Red Mill muesli sure ain't the cheapest. I guess somebody hasta pay for the umbrellas the bag boys hold over your head when it's raining. Anyway, as I was chomping my way through the bag, one breakfast bowl at a time, I noticed that the raisin count for the bag seemed a bit off. It's usually like there's a smattering of raisins in every bowl, but this was more like somebody dumped a whole box o' California raisins in every bag. I don't mind raisins, but when there's two or three to every spoonful, I just started to think that I could just as well eat raisins and skip the crunchy bits o' rolled oats.

So last Saturday while I was eating a bowl of Bob's Red Mill muesli that I'd dumped a half pint o' blackberries in to counter the sweetness o' the raisins, I looked on the World Wide Web, and lo and behold, they had a website! I mean, Bob's Red Mill! Whodathunk a mill would have a website! So I went there, expecting to find one o' those websites where you can find everything but how to complain contact customer service. But bang! There it was! A link for people like me who think there's too damned many raisins in their Bob's Red Mill muesli! So, I did. I wrote 'em a nice email right there on the website and asked them if they'd gotten like an earth shattering deal on a ton o' raisins that they just had to use up before the expiry date or something, 'cause there wuz too damned many of 'em in my bag o' Bob's Red Mill muesli. And I also added, that I have been eating Bob's Red Mill muesli since the dinosaurs turned into birds, and how I enjoy it mightily, but that I ain't never seen so damned many raisins in one bag afore this. Thank you very much. Sincerely, etc.

Just a couple of days later I received an email from a nice lady at Bob's Red Mill. In the email, which I did have to fish outta my spam filter, she said that it was probably a bag from the end of the run, and that they wuz real sorry, and that they would send me another bag if I would like. She also asked if I could give them some details off the bag so that they'd know when it was filled and shipped and stuff.

Well, I wrote the nice lady right back and said that I'd surly love to have a new bag o' Bob's Red Mill muesli, but that I had finished the bag with the several raisins in every spoon, and that I had carelessly thrown it out into the trash. (I did not mention to the nice lady that I could have tried to fish it back outta the trash on account of because the trashmen don't come until the Thursday morning, and it being before then.) And shazzam, this morning I got me another email from the nice lady saying that the Bob's Red Mill muesli was in the mail, and that I could expect to receive it within a week or so. So anyway, now I gotta stop whinging about Bob's Red Mill muesli on account of because the nice lady was real nice -- at least until I can determine that there ain't too many raisins in the bag she's sending me.
