Steam Powered Printers
Feb. 2nd, 2009 09:19 amOver the weekend I replaced the rollers on my steam powered HP printer. After we used it to print the Applecon program guide, it got rather cranky about feeding sheets. Eventually it achieved the state of not feeding sheets. This seems not good in a printer, especially after you've built a good head of steam in the boiler. I'd looked online earlier and found a place that sold replacement rollers without the fuser, which cut the cost down substantially. (There's not much advantage in spending more on a set of rollers than a new printer would cost -- well, OK I've got a full toner cartridge, but a new printer would come with one of those anyway.) The company I bought the rollers from even emailed me out a pdf of the instructions for replacing the rollers. But the instructions were not written for a semi-geek that thinks they're mechanically clever... I ended up not removing one roller the right way (the easy way they suggested) by forcing the blighter out of its position. As a result, one guide slipped out of position, and I had to flip the printer over yesterday and reseat the roller and guide. Then it printed a page! And it did not jam! The real test will come when I try to feed an envelope through. It was down to about 25% chance on feeding envelopes. I figure the HP 2200D toner is cheaper than the Samsung CLP-610ND.
