I remember, back in the 80s, talking to amateur radio operators about taking the extra-class Morse code test. Apparently for most people, it was as much an issue of writing things down fast enough as it was one of understanding the code fast enough. One of their friends was an executive secretary, fluent in shorthand, and was able to breeze through the code test because of that.
