Right click on the Semagic icon in your system tray and select Options. Click on the Friends tab, and uncheck "Check for friends' updates". Or you can just change the "Notify after X server's "year" answers". Or you can just uncheck "Flash tray icon". There are many options.
One of the other things that I love about Semagic is that you can view and edit your Friends list, by right clicking on the system tray icon and selecting "Edit Friends". You can view all of your current friends and see which of them also list you. Under the "Change in friends" tab you can see who has added and dropped you. And under "Friend Groups" you can setup groups of friends... useful for doing those postings to select groups.
