What I find fascinating in the article is Safire's willingness to let the buck stop with Poindexter for this. Our Beloved President, of coure, would never intrude on our privacy in this fashion....

No, it's not the same. There is always some hope. TIPS went down in flames, after all. But this one has serious legs, and people aren't as concerned about privacy violations as they were twenty years ago.
