I note, abstractly & Off Topic, that the NYT requires the use of the latest version of Flash Player to view this article, and casually wonder whether this is because they're now making a point of being Technologically With It, because the information cannot be conveyed in mere words & pictures (graphs, maps), or because the page includes some kind of elaborate (animated, with sound) advertisement. (Not that I intend to upgrade my System to find out, mind you, but this is the first time I've encountered that requirement in the context of an ordinary news article.)

I think... It's...

Usually just the version they use to compile the animation in.

Oh, yes, probably. It's just that I've not come to expect animation in a NYT article -- especially ones on Economics.

It's doing popups with county names and numbers when you roll over them. Not a completely useless thing to do, at least.

That would be good, yes -- not that the numbers would be pleasing, probably, but the information would be interesting & useful, and I've seen the technique used to good advantage elsewhere, created on software compatible with my decrepit computer. So I guess all I really had to complain about (it was early this morning, before coffee) was that the NYT is using Cutting Edge Technology, and nowadays that's not commonly considered good cause for whiningandbitching.
