Oct. 6th, 2002 01:47 pmWent to a great MNSTF meeting at Scott & Irene's last night. Spent the mid part of the day at my aunt's. She's recovering from back surgery.
Fun article on a chocolate society in Paris. Just slightly snobbish.
Bought some key limes today at Cub. Am trying to figure out how to make them transform themselves into pie. Hmm, maybe shoulda bought graham cracker crust instead of pie crust at Cub...
Searching for hard drives. I put two 1 GHz P-IIIs into a Tyan motherboard. The chips went in quite easily -- although I still have to anchor one -- and then I installed Windows XP. That also went quite easily. I'd not been able to install the sneak preview on that motherboard with one 600 MHz chip. It's time to move on past the dual 300 P-II motherboard I've been using for several years. I had XP pack up my old computer drives and programs, but it just won't fit on one 30 gig drive -- or at least after I put Windows XP on there and the files to unpack. I'm lusting after a Promise IDE Raid card that can run a Cat 5 raid. Serial IDE raid would be cooler, but I suspect it's a few years away. SCSI 320 raid would be cooler still, but it's waay expensive and the drives are waay expensive. It's also 64 bit, which the motherboard won't do. Looking at getting 4 Maxtor 80 gig drives. I scoured the Sunday supplements for a special price offer, but could not find any. Damn, damn, damn. The one ad for a 60 gig Maxtor is the older ATA/100 interface. Meanwhile, I'm still on the 2 x 300 MHz P-IIs running a mix of SCSI and IDE drives. Still have to yank the video card out of the computer and switch it over to the Tyan, but I won't do that until I stop using it.
Property taxes are due this month for all of you lucky people what live in Hennepin County in the State of MN. Ouch. But for that, I coulda bought a SCSI drive or two...
Diversicon meeting at DreamHaven today 2:00. Coffee later with Michael. Must meet with Laura and have her sign a corporate paper for the USBank so I can try and open an account for the Fallcon. I forgot to ask Scott about the account for PayPal last night. Bad me. I also forgot to corner Joe and Andrew about WFC. They snuck out to see a movie about cooked people. No, not The Cook, the Thief, His Wife, and Her Lover... a different movie about cooked people.

Date: 2002-10-06 04:04 pm (UTC)I can't find them quite that low with ATA/133 @ 7200 RPM. I think I found the Maxtors down to $118 or so. They're cheaper if you drop back to 5400 RPM (and also slower). They're cheaper if you drop back to ATA/100. The controller card I'm lusting after does ATA/133, so slowing a slower drive in there slows them all down to that speed. Soon IDE will be going to serial, and there will be huge fire sales... or so I hope. And no more ribbon cables! Woohoo!

Date: 2002-10-07 01:42 pm (UTC)Actually, a proper Key Lime Pie is (I believe) basically just a lemon meringue pie, using key lime juice instead of lemon juice. That's the basic idea, anyway.
Excellent article on the Chocolate club!
