What's coming up over the next two weeks?
First up, a reminder: tickets for David Bromberg and the Angel Band (1/9) sold out well in advance of the performance, as have those for Greg Brown's show (2/28). We strongly recommend advance ticket purchase for ALL Cedar shows. There is currently a good ticket supply for most other shows listed, but as our seating capacity is quite limited, that situation can change rapidly with exposure from the press, radio or internet.
Dan Newton has been bringing his Cafe Accordion Orchestra (1/10) in for a January show at The Cedar for the last 4 years, and it has always been a treat to hear a diverse range of tunes from his phenomenally broad repertoire. This year brings some changes: long-time guitarist Brian Barnes has headed home to Kentucky, but standing in on guitar for this concert will be Bob Ekstrand, and adding color and sparkle to the vocals, the multi-talented Diane Jarvi.
Writer and musician Jim Walsh has spawned another local institution: his Mad Ripple Hootenannies or hoots have taken on a life of their own, with regular sessions featuring well-known and not-yet well-known songwriters popping up around the Twin Cities and even elsewhere in the country. The 416 Club welcomes the Mad Ripple for the first hoot at The Cedar (1/17)!
As Chris Riemenschneider of the Star Tribune describes Davina Sowers of Davina and the Vagabonds (1/20) "Two things remain consistent at all her shows, though: her throaty but cushiony voice, which has a sort of hard-mattress comfort to it that's part Bonnie Raitt, Etta James and a little Amy Winehouse, and her band's rollicking New Orleans flavor, driven home by dueling horn players and a bayou-thick standup bass." This show falls on the Third Tuesday of the month, which means it is Dance Night. Get the blood moving with a few tunes, and help send Davina to the International Blues Challenge in Memphis early in February!
Guitar guru Greg Herriges (1/22) has written the book on World Guitar (for Hal Leonard); now he is celebrating the release of his second CD, aptly named Telluric Currents. According to Wikipedia, a telluric current is an electric current which moves underground or through the sea. Telluric currents result from both natural causes and human activity, and the discrete currents interact in a complex pattern. Greg will be bringing along a bunch of friends from the local world music community, including Lehto and Wright as openers, ethnopercussionist Troy Berg, Indian tabla maestro A. Pavan and very special guest, Indian classical vocalist Pooja Goswami.
Looking ahead: Adam Levy's Bunny Clogs project is the next Cedar Family show (1/24), and later that day, singer-songwriter Aby Wolf celebrates her first full-length CD release, with help from Black Blondie and Lucy Michelle and the Velvet Lapelles (1/24). Catie Curtis also has a positive new CD out, Sweet Life, and will be performing along with rising star Meg Hutchinson (1/25). Quirky Brazilian artist Curumin (1/27) spices things up with his zany brew of hip-hop, obsession with Japanese culture, and infectious pop music.
