“Sukiyaki Western Django,” the latest offering from the protean and prolific Japanese director Takashi Miike, is a feast for genre fetishists, a loving and lurid pastiche of the spaghetti westerns that were themselves lurid pastiches of classic Hollywood cowboy pictures. It is fitting that the honorary master of ceremonies at this film-geek orgy is Quentin Tarantino, dean of the international film-geek fraternity, who elegantly disembowels a snake in the opening scene and who appears later to fill in some plot holes and speak in bizarrely accented English. If you like Takashi Miike, watch Sukiyaki Western Django.

A number of the Redbox's are now carrying this. I keep thinking about picking it up but I also know it's a movie that needs my undivided attention, which is hard to get right now.

It's fine

For casual watching. It's very stylized and visual. It seemed like a better version of Kill Bill to me.

Well, I loved Kill Bill so I'll probably enjoy it.

For me, it wears the metaphors better, and, by never deviating into sense, kept me interested. The costuming is much wilder, and the landscape doesn't pretend to be anything other than Japan. Most Miike movies you gotta figure everyone's gonna die gruesomely anyway, so it's no way a surprise. (He does let the cute ones live until close to the end.) The feathers for blood here and there adds a nice whimsical touch.
