Double Espresso and Sam Adams
Dec. 13th, 2008 08:42 pmIn Chicago, with a couple of hours between flights and too fuzzy to figure out what to eat/do, I drank a double-espresso at Starbucks and waited for it to kick in. Then I hit the "Mediterranean Cafe" down on the cheap low end of the B gates, where the Polish woman asked me for an ID. I'd been in and out of the place before, and briefly headed for the high B gates but decided it was still the B side, and not worth the walk. I asked her to recommend something because although I'd been eating United food on the plane all day, I didn't want to end up in Minneapolis 12-hours out and starving. However, because the push to the airport started at 2:30 a.m. Ha Noi time, and the flights from 6:10 to HK, HK to Chicago (15 hours) I was just a bit out of body, and in the condition where I could probably pick between two choices to eat, but five was a conundrum incapable of being resolved. So, I drank a Sam Adams, and remained awake long enough to board the dinky plane to Mpls, where after belting in, I regained consciousness only after the steward had gone past me with the drinks. It was very much like the coffee and the beer fought, and the beer won. Waves and waves of you've-been-up-too-fucking-long descended. I'd dozed on the plane from HK to Chicago, but only briefly.
On the flight, I ran through the United entertainment options for the cattle, and then they started it up again! This would be mildly more acceptable had they not ran the same damned TV shows on the Sai Gon to Hong Kong flight.
Michael had offered to pick me up, and he dropped me off around 5:00, which I think is the 24 hour marker.
Of course, I expect my morning to appear any time now real soon right after I decide to give up and go to bed.
