Q: Are you offended by the phrase "Under God" in the Pledge of Allegiance? Why or why not?

PALIN: Not on your life. If it was good enough for the founding fathers, its good enough for me and I’ll fight in defense of our Pledge of Allegiance.

As I said in another person's LJ:

Remember, we're dealing with people who think America's "founding fathers" were Christians...

As former Texas governor Ma Ferguson said, when asked about English, "If it was good enough for Jesus, it's good enough for me!"

I was just researching this for work...

Written in 1892 by Francis Bellamy…

"I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." – 1892

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." - 1923

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." - 1924 (This is the pledge officially ratified in 1942)

"I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." - 1954

1892-1933 Right hand held high (think Nazi salute)
1942- Roosevelt makes it hand over heart…why? Too obvious links to Hitler and Nazi Germany.
1954- Eisenhower adds under God. Why? Pressure from interest groups (Knights of Columbus) and major religious leaders (Rev. George M. Docherty, of Washington, D.C) citing this reference as being specifically ‘distinctly American’ in view.

Did you see this?

Palin's old pastor, Ed Kalnins, says that if you go to hell if you voted for John Kerry or criticize George W. Bush. Wow.

Yeah, definitely pushing.

Oh - and K. Mark Hoover just posted about this marvelous image. Not sure if it's real or not (looks real to me). OMG:

Not real, just too plausible for comfort.

1) She looks like she does right now in the face but that body is in it's early twenties at the latest.

2) The body has never had a kid. Let alone 5 of them.

Hello. I arrived here by following a chain of LJ posts on Palin, but this particular issue is something of a button issue for me. I hope you don't mind me adding my two cent's worth.

As the child of parents who'd experienced hypocrisy (both) and abuse (mother) performed in the name of religion, I not raised as a Christian or within any specific faith. I now consider myself to be an agnostic, because I see no evidence one way or another about the existence of a god or gods and because there are too many differing views of religion on our very small and insignificant planet (in the context of the universe) for me to select one and view it as the only valid truth.

To get back to the matter at hand: Attending elementary school in the 1960s, I was required, along with my classmates, to stand at attention with my hand over my heart and recite the pledge of allegiance. I didn't believe in the god I was being asked to reference (and reverence), and I felt it would be hypocritical of me to, in essense, pray to him, but I didn't have a choice about participating in the pledge, nor did I want to denigrate my country. I compromised. I said the pledge, but was silent for those two words. (Looking back on it, I can see that this could also be seen as hypocrisy, but it was the best I could do at the time.) None of my teachers or fellow students ever noticed. But, every single day, I felt distanced from my classmates by a requirement that I participate in what felt like a religious observance. Every single day, I was forced to confront the division between myself and my classmates, and to call into question the very meaning of the pledge and (as I grew old enough to be aware of our Bill of Rights) of our constitution.

So, yes. I'm offended by the inclusion of those words. Those words (added so late, as was so well documented by [livejournal.com profile] madtruk) take something I could believe in and support and twist it into something I can't, because they demonstrate how contemptuous of our constitution we can be, as a nation, when it comes to the true separation of church and state.

In an alternate world
