Spent a bit of time this morning looking for a free or cheap program that can do batch resizing of JPG files. Downloaded a couple and found one that works. I sent it out after the Pride pictures I shot on Sunday. (I'm jealous of Drood and wondering what kind of battery his camera takes to shoot 200 pictures -- my battery died at 135.)

Turning off the LCD screen is said to help (forgive me if everybody already knows that). I believe a MicroCentre near you probably carries a multi-cell external battery pack for digitial cameras, which could get you well into the hundreds of shots without battery change or recharge.
