IN Tom Judson’s house in upstate New York there is just one piece of memorabilia that would, to a casual observer, give any indication that he has had a career in entertainment.

Tucked in a bookcase, amid art monographs and a first edition of E. F. Benson’s novel “Mapp and Lucia,” a framed color photograph shows a muscled and inked Mr. Judson wearing a pair of black short-shorts and lying on a bed beside a buxom and elaborately coiffed drag queen named Chi Chi LaRue.

“I chose it because I love Chi Chi,” he said recently.

Ms. LaRue, for those unaware, is a director of gay and bisexual pornography. And Mr. Judson is better known to some as Gus Mattox, who from 2003 until his retirement two years later made over a dozen pornographic films and became something of a sensation, both for his age (43 when he started) and his acting skills. “I was known as the ‘actor’ guy in porn,” he said, a reputation cemented by his 2006 GayVN award for performer of the year, the industry’s top honor.
