Went to see The Lady and the Duke last night at the Lagoon. Good movie, in French. Backgrounds are all painted. Story of a Scottish woman during the French Revolution, tigers you cannot dismount, the persistence of ideas, and the value of sacrifice. Went with Mary, Michael, Liz, and Susan. (Michael, Mary, and Bridget are leaving for Paris Saturday.)

Sigh.

That's the Rohmer film I want to see, that I probably won't get around to seeing before it disappears from the theaters.

Given my current emotional state, probably a good idea I haven't gone to see it.

I always visualize you as calm and placid, must rethink this image.

I think the film left the Lagoon yesterday, although I'm sure it will be in video. It's visually fun, but it is a European movie -- (l o n g).

If you want to do something like see a movie, do it. Emotional states I'm rather less able to comment on without the benefit of half a bottle of wine or a pint of Guiness. Then, I become much more able to comment, although my comments are often less appreciated -- strange as that may sound.

Compared to the guy in the group who asserted that he threw somebody off the dock into the lake (because they were giving him a hard time about how he was dealing with his children), why yes, I am calm and placid.

Which is not to say that I wasn't calm and placid yesterday. What I was, was sinking into depression. I went home and went straight to bed. I'm guessing, based upon your thumbnail description, that it might not be a good movie for me to see if I'm sinking into depression. I might be wrong.

If you speak French, which I don't, the dialog was fun. The plot, very much from another time and place, spoke to what we do during times of stress, and how sometimes it matters. The movie was relaxing, the heroine outmoded, and a bit of an idiot, yet she lived through a period when many with more sense went to the guillotine.

I like your description of the heroine as outmoded, ... a costume drama. (I wish I could speak French for the style.)

David appears calm and steady to me because it's obvious he takes time to think before he acts. Mostly anyway. This is a talent I'm working at learning.
