Alive at the Lagoon last night -- Sean Faris -- although sadly, he kept his shirt on during the Q&A...

I skipped out on the Oscar's party at rvrjoe775rvrjoe775 and drewandrewan's last night because I really had no dog to hunt this year, and I had a sneak to Never Back Down at the Lagoon.

If you sign up for the Landmark chain's email, you get offers for sneaks. Usually they're weighty films that they're trying to create a buzz for. When the offer comes in the email, you hafta send a response to some address with a signifier in the subject. If you're lucky, you get a response which you then print out as the admission ticket and take to the theater. I generally respond to any offer, and then figure out if I'm interested if I get a response.

There's always a warning to come early because they over-offer the movies. Usually there's about sixty people sitting in a big theater. Last night they were asking people to scrunch together, and they delayed the start to squeeze more people in. This is on Oscar night. Most film nuts are glued to the TV to see who gets the golden boy, and here's a theater full of people watching golden boi flesh, fighting on the big screen. This isn't the Lagoon's regular audience -- maybe if the film had been done downunder, but not a Hollywood boi flick, and certainly not a straight Hollywood boi flick without any -- tasteful or not -- sex scenes. (They tend to screen things like Lust, Caution, Dan in Real Life, Into the Wild.)

The movie? It's not Oscar material, but there's plenty o' boi flesh, and enough bikini-clad girl flesh to let you pretend that they're not selling what they're selling. It's reasonably entertaining for some values of skin, pocket Freud, and freshman psych. They include a brief scene of boi/girl fighting on the beach: The Exes. O, and for extra points, there's an English teacher and a sub plot about The Iliad and the shield of Achilles. There's also plenty of Djimon Housnou in case you get tired of white.

Flash alert: Never Back Down. Opens in a theater near you on March 14. Tie up all of your teenage daughters and gay sons, or at least invest in a good dental plan.

D'oh!

Okay, I guess you're forgiven - but damn them for having Sean Faris there on a night when I have a houseful of guests! I was a big fan of his during Life as We Know It, and also enjoyed him on Reunion.

He wuz pretty good...
