Thanks for posting the link; I remember the first time I read that piece. Laughed myself silly, I did.
I had no idea anyone was pondering Spider-Man and celibacy. Such pondering strikes me as a little misguided; while I stopped reading Spider-Man before the big event, I'm certain that Mary Jane Watson did get married to a certain Peter Parker. Not that that says anything about Spider-Man, and celibacy (insert obligatory joke about marriage here). But I also recall seeing a comic featuring the daughter of Mary Jane and Peter, which suggests that celibacy was not a part of the marriage at some point in the marriage.
I gotta admit that "I'm celibate because I'm afraid that, in the throes of passion, my proportionate strength of a spider might result in the unfortunate demise of my partner" sounds a lot better than the standard reason for being celibate. Whatever it may be.
Spiderman isn't celibate by choice: since he was bitten by the radioactive spider, he's made impotent by images of his partner killing and eating him when they finish.
Another interesting take on the issue. Thanks, Bob.
Although that does remind me of another bit of dissatisfaction with how the movie changed the story - the web squirters. I find the development of his web squirters in the original rather more satisfying than the historical revision done by the movie.
On the Teri Gross where she was talking with Stan Lee, he comment on how both people who looked at doing the movie took the same track, that he grow them. Stan sketched out how he might have done it, which he said probably would take up too much movie time and really not be worth it. Then he said he thought it worked just fine, thanked the purists, but said it was just fine with him. (I assume he's cashed the first royalty check by now.)
