I've achieved the state where I panic about where to put screens when I only have one monitor. How do people live like that?

Virtual screens. Windoze has now caught up with TVTWM (from 1990).

Yep. I keep Xfce with four desktops, pretty much all the time. One for surfing, one for writing, one for graphics, one as a spare.
