Caught the movie yesterday downtown. I liked it better than Narnia. The actors are pretty first rate, and the effects are great. Loved the blimps. Nicole does a bang-up job, and her costumes are gorgeous. The battle doesn't seem quite as contrived as the one in Narnia. Liked the props more too: blimps, three-wheeled cars -- what's not to like?

I liked it a well and also enjoyed the technology. I thought the battle suffered in comparison to LotR and Narnia but only on the aspect of scale; it seemed it wanted to be big but just didn't have the massive feel the others did. I hope we get to see more bears in action in the sequels!

Yes, I'd hafta agree. Although I thought they should not have tried to make the scope seem so vast. It got kinda muddled here and there. I kept feeling a desire for 70mm film as well.

however, there really isn't an epic battle in the first book, that's saved for the final book. The most epic battle in the first book was the fight between the Iorek and Iofur, in my opinion.

If you have not read the books, do so now.

It's kinda...

Filmed as an epic battle, when it's really some mean soldiers fighting against a bunch of escaping kids... with the bear, witches & egyptians thrown in to make it seem epic and save the day. I think they kinda overdid it in the film.

I caught the film last weekend while Sarah was down here. I enjoyed it a lot. Surprisingly, so did Sarah. She's hard to please Much more a "serious" film fan. I, too, loved the blimps. They made it seems so possible to build and use them, although hydrogen may not have been the best choice for gas given the jet exhaust.

I'm looking forward to seeing what they do with wheeled creatures later on.

I'm delighted to hear that it is a decent movie. The ring-wing nutcases have been blogging against it on the grounds that it will cause children to loose their souls. I'll have to manage to see it eventually.
