I hit Menards at the crack o' dawn, well, actually way before especially since it wuz cloudy and picked up some maple for my next project.

This afternoon, I went to Architectural Antiques, which almost always is a bust, in search of parts for one of the 1907 floor vents. As usual, they had crappy, rusted, crusted, dirty antique floor vents for more expensive prices than I can buy nice, beautiful reproductions at Signature Hardware. And, at that, they had a crappy selection and no parts. Not even the little half-moon adjuster I'm missing and certainly not the flat headed screws I need to fasten the louvers back on to the grate. I whipped back over to my side of town and the hardware on 38th & Nicollet, where they had screws! And O rings! I got a passel of O rings to tighten up the louvers so that I can do without the missing half-moon wheel. I assembled it all in the basement, put it back in the kitchen and noticed that I'd rotated the grate 180 -- not that it matters without the half-moon adjuster, but just the same..

Architectural Antiques wanted $75 for some 8 X 10 registers that I'd want to run through the dishwasher a few dozen times before I attempted to scrub the rust off 'em. Nice solid brass new ones are about $50, and the powder coated reproductions are a bit more, $71.

I buzzed past the Art Institute to look for holiday cards, but the circling cars and packed parking lots indicated to me that today was probably not a good day.
