Fresh off the tree olives. My guess is that they'd taste like chewing oak bark. A few changes of water, a little lye, more salt, maybe ready to eat...

Aha - of course. I hadn't taken that into account. (Nor did I realize that olives couldn't be eaten fresh. Makes you wonder how humans discovered they were edible in the first place...)

I'll guess from watching animals eat them and trying some that have been in a river or water. It's like recipes for eating stinging nettles... boil them in three changes of water... ;-)
