Thong gets sworn in as a citizen today at 5:00 in the wilds north of St. Paul. Heading out of work early to help find the place.

Yippee for Thong! What a proud day. Tell us what it was like... did he have to take citizenship classes, what did they teach, how many people were sworn in, did they take his passport away, or did he even have a passport?

Details, man!

K & B. [give him our best congrats, will you?]

713 people? Something like that. Huge auditorium at Bethel College full of newbies. He just applied for his US passport, otherwise, he's had a Vietnamese passport.

You have to take a short test, and he studied mostly on the internet.

The ceremony, second that I've been at, was probably more impressive if you were on the floor. Up in the balcony, it was a bit long. When Thi got sworn in last year downtown, it was quicker.

They did take away his green card (it was expiring anyway), and had given him some kind of temporary ID. He was in the process of applying for another type of travel permit when he finally got the notice for the citizenship ceremony. The next day, he was out at Brooklyn Center applying for a US Passport. They, of course, took his new citizenship certificate as proof and sent it off with the application.
