Sometimes...

The cables become smaller. The slots become different, and often inexplicably different and fade into combinations that you can't even buy things to plug into. Large floppies give way to smaller floppies, which in turn give way to smaller floppies, and then give way to nothing. The hard drive communication protocols change from one to another. The cables, once flat and wide, become small and thin. The motherboard plugs themselves change from one to the other, with differing numbers of wires snaking from a power supply to the board. It's very like a city, only smaller.
