Friday was the coffee house with the Usual Suspects.
Saturday was the House Warming at drewandrewan and rvrjoe775rvrjoe775.

My master plan was to get up early, run to Lunds, and pick up, ingredients, and bake a King Cake for their Mardi Gras theme. It was colder than hell, and I lallygagged around the house, watching an early Jack Nicholson movie on cable (The Raven -- Peter Lorre, Boris Karloff, and Vincent Price). I finally headed out around 11, and other than subbing lavender sugar for the purple, found everything. Started it around noon, and off and on, worked on it until close to five.

I mixed recipes and used on with a marzipan filling flavored with orange, but a dough with lemon zest and nutmeg. It was pretty good. I stuck two Jamaican twenty dollar coins in it as stand-ins for the baby, and got there about 5:30 or six. Stopped to pick up two loaves of bread at the French Meadow.

I made Andrew cut the cake, and it was pretty good. He took a bunch of pics, and I got a few of it.

minnehahaminnehaha k helped color it up after I arrived. (Don't put the glazed cake outside when it's ten below to cool it down a bit more... the glaze sets rather quickly...)

Had a great time, and drove Laura Jean home around midnight.

Sunday was pancakes at mizzlaurajeanmizzlaurajean and davidschrothdavidschroth.

Have you ever colored your own sugar? I did it a few years ago when I made a cake for Mardi Gras and couldn't find purple sugar. It was easier than I thought it would be- just mix the red and the blue to get the shade of purple I wanted- could tell by smearing a small amount on a clear glass plate and then looking through it with the kitchen light behind it. Then drop it by two or three drops at a time in the sugar- not getting anything saturated enough to dissolve it and smashing and stirring until the color was evenly distributed. Probably more work than you wanted to do this time though.

I wuzn't sure

If my twenty year old food color would be any good, and the difference between buying colored sugar and food coloring isn't much.
