I replied telling him to go! I think we need to get him onto program too.

I suggest that if he has 200 bucks to blow for no good reason he might want to.
Well, of course, he could donate to Katrina victims.

I spent more than $200 at the charity auction at last year's North American Science Fiction Convention; proceeds from the auction went to the Red Cross for Katrina relief.

And just think, the money you spent on con registration could have gone there as well.

Tell me something... do you donate all of your disposable income to charity? If not, then you have no call to make those kinds of comments.

A quick skim of your interests, sir, suggests that you might attend the occasional convention and go to the occasional movie. Seems like you're not living a life without entertainment.

Everybody has their own preferences. I think a Worldcon is worth the price of ten other conventions. And what I've learned from science fiction helps me afford travel, fandom, and the charities I spend money on.

I haven't been to a world co(n in over 15 years (and that because it was paid for in full (as the bid's founder, I rated something).
My life is fairly spartan, yet I do manage to give money to charity.
All things considered, I'm glad you enjoy fandom. I won't stop you. But I think it's a waste of money.
I'd rather hike the Appalachian Trail then go to a con.
And, if Drum is smart, he won't waste his time going to a world con.

Oh, I'm so terribly sorry I offended you.
I most certainly didn't mean to.
Oh, who am I kidding.
I really don't give a flying fuck what you think.
I've probably done more in, for and to fandom then you could possibly imagine.
So it's the voice of experience that I speak with.
It's a waste of money. It's a waste of time, and a supreme waste of energy.

Science fiction fandom is the community of the literature of ideas. We are the culture in which new ideas grow and change before being released into the world at large. Many people find Worldcons to be positive life-changing experiences that are vastly more useful than a few dozen movies or DVDs.

Different things work for different people, but if someone is "smart", they'll almost certainly benefit from the intellectual stimulation one finds at a Worldcon.
