Xcaret

Yesterday, Judy, Karen and I went to Xcaret.

Around seven, I went and wandered around on the beach, down to the south for a ways. I found my first shell, but left it, a dead fish, and a sponge. Afterwards, I came back and ate some bread in my cousin's room. Then the three of us spent the morning at the pool through happy hour.

Around noon, we packed it up and went to grab a taxi to Xcaret, which is south of Playa del Carmin. Karen had read in the guide book that they had a butterfly garden, amongst other things, and thought it sounded more fun than the major water park, Xe-Ha (I'll hafta check that spelling.) Most of the people that go to these resorts, go on a tour throught the hotel. We had some trouble getting a taxi with the bellboys because they thought we'd be on a bus. Anyway, eventually we were off in a van.

The park is run by a bunch of tree-huggers, and has dolphins (which you can swim with if you pay money and have the right kind of sunscreen), turtles, and a goodly selection of wildlife. It's quite impressive, and not cheap.

After wandering through their caves and trying to find the lepidarium, we went in search of food. We ate at the Mexican theme restaurant, which had an amazing collection of ceiling fans. I had corn smutt empinadas and chicken mole. Karen had a collection of appetizers and a salad, judy had chicken enchiladas. We all had a frou-frou drink special -- mango, peach, and orange with or without rum. They had it without; I had it with. It came in a coconut carved out of the husk to look like a racoon. It also came with ecologically friendly paper straws which disintegrated well before the beverage was finished.

After we ate, it was starting to get quite hot, and we ducked into the aquarium, wandered amongst the turtles, found the manatees, and the crocodile and the sheltered reef where you can go snorkling. They also do scuba and have a head bubble (with air) that you can go down in. We were too late for the swim with the dolphins, and since I was the only one with a swimming suit, we also skipped the river ride. Somewhere, there was a raft down a "jungle stream" but we never found it. There's also a tower over the park, but it looked like a good method to bake, and we didn't go over to it.

On our way back from trying to find the dolphins, the cats were up and walking around. During the heat of the day, they'd all been sleeping except for one cat that was pacing and panting. They have four cats, one jaguar, one puma, and two cats that looked like mountain lions.

We had a dinner reservation at the hotel for 6:00, so around 5:00, we hopped in a taxi and ran back. After shopping at one of the gift stores for a bit. The driver got us back around 5:30, but my cousin did not want to go to the restaurant, so we canceled the reservation. I never did make it back out of the room.
